Overview

Overview

TeachingBooks is a curated database of resources connected to children’s and young-adult books. Users find author interviews, book guides, pronunciation recordings, text complexity information, and instructional connections for specific titles. The book title is the connection between the database and a classroom or library activity. Librarians and teachers select supporting resources, while student responses and lending records remain in their respective workflows.

Features

Audience and instructional role

Grades / learners:

K–12 readers, educators, librarians, and families exploring books and authors

Primary users:

teachers, librarians, students, literacy coaches, and families

Learning focus:

book discovery, author context, read-aloud support, vocabulary, and literature-based instruction — a curated database of resources connected to children’s and young-adult books

How it supports learning

  • Users find author interviews, book guides, pronunciation recordings, text complexity information, and instructional connections for specific titles.
  • Teachers should connect use to explicit learning goals and inspect student work rather than rely on completion, time-on-task, or engagement alone.

Implementation and instructional decisions

  • This is a literature and library support resource rather than a curriculum; connect resources to locally selected, inclusive texts and instructional purposes.
  • Districts should confirm accessibility, language support, student-data practices, assignment workflow, reporting, and the continuing role of teacher judgment.

TeachingBooks started in November, 2000 with a simple goal in mind: to let every reader — no matter who they are or where they live — have the opportunity to learn directly from the author of the book they are reading, at that very moment of impact.

I decided to use the World Wide Web as the foundational equalizing tool, and started inviting myself into homes of amazing authors and illustrators to film them so that everyone could have Christopher Paul Curtis, Jack Gantos, Denise Fleming, and others in their classrooms, anytime.
