Second Step provides social-emotional learning programs for schools. Teachers use sequenced lessons and practice activities to develop skills such as managing emotions, building relationships, and solving interpersonal problems. Programs and supporting resources vary by age group and implementation. The selected age-level program defines the lesson sequence and practice. Teachers connect student discussion and observed skills with local goals, keeping curriculum participation separate from diagnostic or clinical judgments.

How It Works
Our universal, classroom-based program is designed to teach children how to understand and manage their emotions, control their reactions, be aware of others’ feelings, and have the skills to problem-solve and make responsible decisions.
Each grade-level kit includes evidence-based, easy-to-teach, short weekly lessons, engaging songs and games, and daily activities and take-home materials to reinforce learning.
Comprehensive staff and family support materials strengthen the skills that improve communication, relationships, and learning.
Schools can add Bullying Prevention and Child Protection Units to ensure that everyone feels safe, supported, and ready to learn. Together, our programs provide a cohesive foundation for success in school and life.
Research
Five key commitments to research quality and integrity set our programs apart with great experiences and positive outcomes for students.
Impact
More than 26 million children in 45,000 schools in all 50 states and around the world benefit from our social-emotional learning programs each year.
Vision
Educators spoke, and we listened: we’re building more engagement, flexibility, and implementation support into our full range of PreK through Grade 12 programs.
