Do not change the grade merely to make the exit code pass. First establish the grade represented by this enrollment segment and the event that ended or updated it. Then select the current combination supported by both facts.

A valid grade pairing is necessary, but it is not the entire validation story. For example, E230 appears with every current grade here, yet its School Completion Status must also form a valid combination with both E230 and the student’s grade. Always review the connected fields.

    • Was this a year-end update, Grade 12 continuation, completion, transfer, no-show, discipline event, or another circumstance?
    • What evidence supports the selected reason?
    • Is the exit code current in Version 18?
    • Does the code’s full definition—not merely its short name—fit?
  • Inspect SIS and extract
    • Do fields 1.24 and 1.26 come from the same enrollment segment?
    • What exact two-character values appear in the raw file?
    • Did rollover or a bulk exit process change one field?
    • Does a local withdrawal reason map differently by grade?
    • Will the next scheduled extract reproduce the error?
  • Review connected validations
    • If E230, do Completion Status and Grade Level also form a valid combination?
    • Does the Exit Date fit the Start Date and event chronology?
    • Does the reason conflict with a subsequent enrollment?

  3. Verify the student’s grade

    Use the cumulative record, schedule, school grade span, and segment dates.

  4. Verify the exit event

    Use attendance, transfer, discipline, completion, program, and withdrawal evidence as applicable.

  5. Apply the Version 18 matrix

    Select a current grade/exit pair supported by both established facts.

  6. Validate connected fields

    Review Exit Date, Completion Status, grade-specific rules, and surrounding enrollments.

  7. Correct the owning system

    Repair the SIS record, rollover workflow, obsolete dropdown, crosswalk, or extract join.

  8. Submit and verify

    Confirm SENR0023 clears and CALPADS displays the intended grade and exit.

  9. Review the shared population

    Find other records sharing the same invalid pair, school, grade, bulk process, retired code, or mapping.

Before closing the issue

  • Confirm Grade Level and Exit Reason describe the same enrollment segment.
  • Verify both values are factual—not selected merely to satisfy the matrix.
  • Confirm the combination is current for Version 18.
  • Review Completion Status and other connected validations when applicable.
  • Ensure the SIS and next extract reproduce the accepted pair.
  • Assess downstream transfer, discipline, completion, cohort, and dropout effects.
