Suggested resolution
Read the complete validation
CALPADS rule: Student Exit Reason Code and Student School Completion Status Code must be a valid combination.
Severity: Fatal Type: Input Validation
Fields validated:
- 1.26 Student Exit Reason Code
- 1.27 Student School Completion Status Code
The practical rule: If field 1.26 is E230, field 1.27 must contain the current completion result supported by the student’s records. If field 1.26 contains any other exit reason, field 1.27 should be blank. Do not substitute a historical code merely because it still appears in an older SIS list.
Current valid combinations for Version 18
| Student Exit Reason | Completion Status | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
E230 Completer Exit | 100 | Graduated with a standard high school diploma |
E230 Completer Exit | 102 | Alternative Diploma Pathway |
E230 Completer Exit | 120 | Student with disabilities certificate of completion |
E230 Completer Exit | 250 | Adult Education high school diploma |
E230 Completer Exit | 320 | High school equivalency certificate, without a standard high school diploma |
E230 Completer Exit | 330 | California Certificate of Proficiency, without a standard high school diploma |
E230 Completer Exit | 360 | Completed grade 12 without completing graduation requirements; not a graduate |
E230 Completer Exit | 480 | Promoted or matriculated to a California public school after completing the highest grade offered |
E230 Completer Exit | 485 | Promoted or matriculated to an out-of-California public school after completing the highest grade offered |
Important: “Completer” is broader than “high school graduate.” Codes 480 and 485 cover students who completed the highest grade offered by a school and matriculated to the applicable public-school setting.
Valid and invalid examples
| Submitted values | Result | Why |
|---|---|---|
E230 + 100 | Valid combination | The student completed the program and earned a standard high school diploma. |
E230 + 120 | Valid combination | The supported outcome is a certificate of completion for a student with disabilities. |
E230 + 480 | Valid combination | The student completed the highest grade offered and matriculated to another California public school. |
E230 + blank | Invalid/incomplete | A Completer Exit requires the completion result in field 1.27. |
T160 + 100 | Invalid combination | A transfer exit cannot simultaneously carry a school-completion status. |
E155 + 480 | Invalid combination | When the student completed the highest grade offered and matriculated, use the supported E230 + 480 combination—not a routine year-end exit with a completion status. |
E230 + 104 | Historical only | The pairing existed previously, but status 104 is retired for current events. |
Choose the code from the documented outcome
| Possible outcome | Evidence to verify | Coding concern |
|---|---|---|
| Standard diploma | Final transcript, graduation audit, diploma award date, and local/state requirements. | Use 100 only when the standard diploma was actually earned. |
| Alternative Diploma Pathway | Student eligibility, governing pathway requirements, completed coursework, and awarded credential. | Do not treat 102 as a generic alternative to a standard diploma. |
| Certificate for student with disabilities | Student disability status and the certificate actually awarded. | Distinguish 120 from a diploma and from merely completing grade 12. |
| Adult Education diploma | Adult Education program record and diploma documentation. | Use 250 only for the defined Adult Education outcome. |
| Equivalency or proficiency credential | Official credential documentation and confirmation that no standard diploma was earned. | Distinguish 320 from 330. |
| Grade 12 completed; requirements not met | Transcript and graduation audit showing the student is not a graduate. | 360 does not mean a diploma was awarded. |
| Highest grade offered completed | School grade span, completed grade, next public-school destination, and matriculation evidence. | Use 480 for California public schools and 485 for out-of-California public schools. |
What commonly produces SENR0022
| What you find | Likely cause | Durable correction |
|---|---|---|
| Completion status with a transfer or other exit | The SIS preserved an old completion value or joined fields from different segments. | Clear field 1.27 for a true non-completion exit and repair segment selection. |
E230 with no status | The completion event was entered without its result or the extract suppressed field 1.27. | Verify the credential/outcome, populate the current supported status, and repair the extract. |
E230 with retired 104, 106, or 108 | An obsolete SIS dropdown or local crosswalk remains active. | Determine the present factual outcome and update the crosswalk; do not mechanically translate retired codes. |
Expected graduate coded 100 | Projected graduation was reported before final completion was established. | Wait for authoritative completion evidence and report the actual result. |
E155 with 480/485 | A highest-grade matriculation event was treated as an ordinary year-end exit. | Verify the school grade span and destination, then use the supported E230 combination. |
| Correct values in SIS; different pair in file | The report, integration, or local-code mapping transforms one or both fields incorrectly. | Repair the generation logic and test the raw SENR fields before upload. |
Choose the diagnostic pathway
- Confirm that this is a completion event
- What academic program or highest grade offered did the student complete?
- Was a diploma, certificate, equivalency, proficiency credential, or matriculation outcome actually established?
- Is
E230supported, or did the student transfer/exit for another reason? - Does the event date align with the student record?
- Identify the precise completion result
- What credential or outcome does the transcript and cumulative file support?
- Is the status current in Version 18?
- For
480/485, did the student finish the highest grade offered? - Was the destination a California or out-of-California public school?
- Was code
100entered based on expectation rather than final award?
- Inspect SIS and extract
- Are fields 1.26 and 1.27 stored on the same enrollment segment?
- What exact values appear in the raw SENR row?
- Does a retired local value still map to
104,106, or108? - Did rollover, cloning, or a join carry forward a completion status?
- Will the next scheduled extract reproduce the corrected pair?
- Review connected validations
- Does the Completion Status form a valid combination with Grade Level?
- Does the Exit Date reflect the actual completion event?
- Does the exit conflict with a subsequent enrollment or the student’s status history?
- Could the correction affect graduate, completer, cohort, or dropout reporting?

Evidence to preserve
- Final transcript and graduation audit
- Diploma, certificate, or credential record
- School grade-span and matriculation evidence
- Raw SENR fields 1.26 and 1.27
- Local-to-CALPADS code mapping
- Accepted CALPADS result
Recommended correction path
Preserve the rejected row
Capture the submission ID, SSID, enrollment key, grade, Exit Date, and exact fields 1.26 and 1.27.
Confirm the intended enrollment
Match student, school, Start Date, Enrollment Status, grade, and existing CALPADS history.
Determine whether completion occurred
Distinguish a completed program or highest-grade matriculation from a transfer or routine exit.
Verify the authoritative outcome
Review the transcript, graduation audit, awarded credential, disability documentation, or matriculation evidence.
Apply the Version 18 rule
Use
E230with the supported current status, or leave Completion Status blank for a true non-completion exit.Validate connected fields
Confirm Grade Level, Exit Date, school grade span, and any following enrollment support the result.
Correct the owning system
Repair the SIS record, retired-code dropdown, local crosswalk, segment join, or extract mapping.
Submit and verify
Confirm SENR0022 clears and CALPADS displays the intended exit and completion outcome.
Review the shared population
Find other records using the same invalid pair, retired status, local code, school workflow, or extract logic.
Before closing the issue
- Confirm field 1.27 is populated only with a supported
E230completion event. - Verify the status is current and supported by authoritative student records.
- Confirm Grade Level and Completion Status also form a valid combination.
- Ensure fields 1.26 and 1.27 came from the same enrollment segment.
- Verify the SIS and next extract reproduce the accepted result.
- Review downstream graduate, completer, cohort, dropout, and accountability effects.
