SELA0322: EO Requires English or American Sign Language
A student reported as English Only (EO) must have a primary language of English (00 or eng) or American Sign Language (ase) under the current CALPADS rule.
Focus fields: ELAS Code (12.13) and Primary Language Code (12.15)
Recommended correction path
- 1
Verify the current code—not the label
Inspect the exported value and the SIS-to-CALPADS crosswalk. The current ASL code is ase; older references to sgn or numeric-only mappings may be stale.
- 2
Review the original Home Language Survey
Determine whether EO is supported. If a non-English language was reported, follow the required identification process rather than forcing EO.
- 3
Confirm the ELAS history
Check whether CALPADS already holds TBD, EL, IFEP, or RFEP. A local EO default must not overwrite a valid statewide status.
- 4
Correct the source and mapping
Update either the primary-language code or the ELAS value based on evidence, and repair any outdated export crosswalk that affects other students.
- 5
Resubmit and sample-check
Confirm this student posts successfully, then query other EO records from the same source system to detect a broader mapping problem.
Before closing the ticket
- Save the rejected-record details and the evidence used for the correction.
- Confirm the fix in CALPADS—not only in the SIS export preview.
- When ELPAC eligibility is affected, coordinate directly with the LEA ELPAC coordinator and verify TOMS after the normal data exchange.
