SELA0285: ELAS Date or Status Is Out of Sequence

The submitted ELAS is a new status, but its start date does not come after the student’s most recent stored ELAS date—or the proposed status progression is not permitted.

Focus fields: ELAS Code (12.13), ELAS Start Date (12.14), and the full ODS sequence

Recommended correction path

  1. 1

    Build a simple status timeline

List every stored ELAS code and start date in chronological order, then place the proposed record on that timeline.

  2. 2

Confirm the event and its date

Use the relevant Initial ELPAC, reclassification, or correction documentation. Never move a date solely to make it later than the prior record.

  3. 3

    Check the allowed progression

Use the current CALPADS Valid Code Combinations for Current ELAS to Submitted ELAS. A chronologically later date does not make an invalid status transition valid.

  4. 4

Repair the correct point in the chain

Correct the SIS record, the proposed transaction, or—through the proper owner—the earlier ODS record that is actually wrong. Avoid adding compensating records.

  5. 5

Submit and reconcile the final timeline

Verify that CALPADS shows the intended sequence with no duplicate or overlapping interpretation, then check the student’s operational EL/testing status.

Before closing the ticket

  • Save the rejected-record details and the evidence used for the correction.
  • Confirm the fix in CALPADS—not only in the SIS export preview.
  • When ELPAC eligibility is affected, coordinate directly with the LEA ELPAC coordinator and verify TOMS after the normal data exchange.
