SELA0255: Invalid Change in English Language Acquisition Status

The submitted status is not an allowed next step from the student’s most recent ELAS in the CALPADS ODS. ELAS is a statewide history, not a status that restarts when a student changes schools or LEAs.

Focus fields: ELAS Code (12.13), the current ODS status, and correction-reason workflow when applicable

Recommended correction path

  1. 1

    Read the statewide history first

Open the student’s complete SELA history in CALPADS and identify the most recent code, date, reporting LEA, and record owner.

  2. 2

    Validate the intended transition

Compare the current-to-submitted transition with the current CALPADS Valid Code Combinations. Examples such as EL to RFEP require documented reclassification; RFEP must not be replaced by EO simply because the student is now proficient.

  3. 3

Distinguish a new event from a correction

If a legitimate new status occurred, submit the allowed next status and true effective date. If an earlier status is wrong, use the authorized correction process instead of creating a false progression.

  4. 4

Coordinate when another LEA owns the record

Do not overwrite history to force acceptance. Contact the owning LEA or submit a CALPADS service request when the statewide record is incorrect and your LEA cannot edit it.

  5. 5

    Correct, submit, and reconcile

Update the SIS and CALPADS through the appropriate method, then confirm the resulting sequence supports the student’s actual identification, services, and testing status.

Before closing the ticket

  • Save the rejected-record details and the evidence used for the correction.
  • Confirm the fix in CALPADS—not only in the SIS export preview.
  • When ELPAC eligibility is affected, coordinate directly with the LEA ELPAC coordinator and verify TOMS after the normal data exchange.
