Normal progression versus correction

ActionMeaningExample
Normal next statusA genuine new event follows the allowed pathwayTBD → EO, IFEP, or EL; EL → RFEP
CorrectionAn earlier classification was wrong and is being repaired with evidenceEO → TBD using Code 1; EL/IFEP → EO using Code 4; EL ↔ IFEP using Code 5
Invalid rewriteA new row attempts to replace history without an authorized correctionRFEP → EO because the student is now proficient

RFEP does not become EO. RFEP records that the student was previously EL and was later reclassified. Current proficiency does not erase the EL-to-RFEP history.

Recommended correction path

  1. 1

    Read the statewide history first

Identify the most recent ODS code, start date, Reporting LEA, and record owner.

  2. 2

    Name the intended action

Decide whether this is a real later status event or a correction of an earlier classification.

  3. 3

    Validate the transition

Use the current CALPADS valid-code combinations. A later date alone cannot legalize an invalid sequence.

  4. 4

Use evidence and the proper method

For a normal event, submit the true status/date. For a correction, use online maintenance, the permitted Correction Reason Code, and required supporting evidence.

  5. 5

    Coordinate ownership

When another LEA owns an inaccurate historical record, coordinate with that LEA or CALPADS Support rather than adding a compensating status.

  6. 6

    Reconcile consequences

Verify CALPADS, SIS, TOMS, testing eligibility, services, and reports reflect one accurate sequence.
