Student Race Missing Indicator must accurately reflect what is populated in the Student Race Code Fields. If Race is known, Race 1 should be populated prior to Race 2 through Race 5 codes.

Identity must be reported—not inferred
Do not infer race or Hispanic/Latino ethnicity from a student's name, appearance, language, birthplace, address, siblings or a staff assumption. Today's families contain every imaginable combination of characteristics.
Intellectual humility recognizes what staff do not know. Thoroughness means locating the authorized response, preserving multiple reported race selections when applicable, and using missing indicators only according to current CALPADS rules.

Capture revision, school, year, identifiers, counts and relevant detail rows.

Classify the discrepancy
Separate a true zero or legitimate exception from a missing, stale, duplicated, mis-keyed or out-of-period record.

Compare shared identifiers, effective dates, Census Day status and the complete history—not only the last upload.

Verify authoritative evidence
Use authorized enrollment response and documented collection process. Record what was checked and who confirmed it.

Apply only the supported correction
Report the supplied race information or apply the missing indicator under current rules; never infer identity. Repair repeatable source mappings where applicable.

Regenerate and reconcile
Wait for processing, rebuild the Fall 2 snapshot, confirm the error clears, and compare downstream counts and detail reports.
Retained official CALPADS guidance
Understanding the Error: Student Race data is not accurately populated based on Student Race Missing Indicator and/or Race Codes 1-5 for enrollments where enrollment status = 10 (primary), 30 (short-term), and 50 (non-ADA). Suggested Resolution: 1) If Student Missing Race Indicator is populated with a "N" or is blank, Student Race 1 Code should be populated; OR 2) If the Student Missing Race Indicator is "N" or blank, and any of the Student Race 2-5 Code are populated, Race Code 1 must populated before Student Race 2-5 codes; OR 3) If Student Missing Race Indicator is populated with a "Y", Race Code 1-5 should not be populated.
