GED, TASC, and HiSET in plain language

These names refer to examinations designed to show that a person has academic knowledge comparable to a high school graduate. Passing an authorized examination may lead to a high school equivalency certificate. It does not mean that the student completed the same coursework or earned the same credential as a student receiving a standard high school diploma.

TermWhat the name meansHow to understand it here
GEDGeneral Educational DevelopmentA widely recognized series of high school equivalency examinations. People often use “GED” informally to mean any equivalency credential, but the term properly refers to this particular testing program.
TASCTest Assessing Secondary CompletionA high school equivalency examination used during an earlier period. Treat references to TASC as potentially historical and verify the student’s actual credential and date.
HiSETHigh School Equivalency TestAnother examination pathway used to demonstrate high school-level academic proficiency and obtain an equivalency credential where authorized.

The examination and the credential are related but not identical. The student takes an approved examination; the authorized agency issues or recognizes the resulting high school equivalency certificate. CALPADS code 320 describes the completion outcome—not merely registration for or participation in a test.

Recommended correction path

  1. 1

    Preserve the warning row

Capture SSID, CALPADS birth date, exit date, exit reason, and completion status.

  2. 2

    Calculate age on field 1.25

Confirm whether the sixteenth birthday occurred on or before the exit date.

  3. 3

    Verify the credential

Confirm that the student earned an authorized high school equivalency certificate and did not receive a standard diploma.

  4. 4

    Identify the incorrect value

Determine whether birth date, exit date, exit reason, or completion status conflicts with the evidence.

  5. 5

    Correct the owning system

Repair SINF, SENR, the SIS, or the extract mapping rather than editing only the upload file.

  6. 6

    Resubmit and verify

Confirm SENR0265 clears and CALPADS displays the correct completion outcome.
