What occurredGrade-level questionCompletion-status question
Student earned a high school diploma or another high-school completion credentialDoes field 1.24 identify the appropriate high-school/adult grade context?Does field 1.27 identify the exact credential actually awarded?
Student completed the highest grade offered by a lower-grade school and matriculatedIs the final grade at that school correct?Use the applicable matriculation completion status—not a high school diploma code.
Student transferred or withdrew without completingRetain the factual grade.Completion Status generally should not be populated merely because the enrollment ended.
Record contains a retired or locally defined valueConfirm the current CALPADS grade code.Crosswalk to the current factual status; do not force a convenient pair.

Completion is an outcome, not an exit-date shortcut. A student can leave Grade 12 without earning a diploma, and a younger student can complete the highest grade offered by a school without becoming a high school graduate.

What commonly produces SENR0227

  • The SIS advanced the student’s grade before the prior-year completion record was extracted.
  • A default diploma status was assigned to every E230 exit.
  • A lower-school matriculation was coded as high school graduation.
  • The grade is factual, but the completion credential was selected incorrectly.
  • The completion status is factual, but the record carries an incorrect or stale grade.
  • A retired local crosswalk continues to generate an obsolete combination.

Recommended correction path

  1. 1

    Preserve the rejected pair

Capture fields 1.24 and 1.27 with the exit reason and exit date.

  2. 2

    Confirm the final grade

Use enrollment history and the transcript, not the student’s current grade.

  3. 3

    Confirm the outcome

Determine the diploma, certificate, equivalency, noncompletion, or matriculation event actually documented.

  4. 4

    Check the current combination

Verify the grade/status pair in the Version 18 Valid Code Combinations table.

  5. 5

    Correct the unsupported field

Change grade, completion status, or both only when the source evidence requires it.

  6. 6

    Repair the source mapping

Correct SIS defaults, rollover timing, or the completion-status crosswalk.

  7. 7

    Resubmit and verify

Confirm SENR0227 clears and graduate, completer, and cohort reporting remain accurate.
