Put both segments on one timeline. A later enrollment must not begin while the earlier segment is still active. Determine the student’s actual attendance and enrollment events before changing either record.

Understand which “start date” CALPADS is evaluating

What commonly produces SENR0178

  • A historical closed enrollment has an Exit Date extending into a later segment.
  • A prior enrollment remains open in CALPADS even though the current SIS view shows it closed.
  • Two historical or current segments use the same or overlapping Start Dates.
  • An annual rollover, re-entry, or conversion created a duplicate enrollment.
  • An E150 continuing segment began before the prior segment ended.
  • The SIS was corrected, but the historical CALPADS reconciliation transaction did not post.
  • The extract joined dates from different local enrollment records.

Recommended correction path

  1. Preserve the rejected row

    Capture submission ID, SSID, school, Start Date, and untouched SENR row.

  2. Review complete ODS history

    Locate every enrollment for the student at the same LEA and school.

  3. Mark the overlapping dates

    Place each Start Date and Exit Date on one timeline.

  4. Verify actual attendance

    Determine when each enrollment began and ended.

  5. Identify the wrong segment

    Find the unsupported Start Date, Exit Date, open record, or duplicate.

  6. Use the correct transaction method

    Remember that changing Start Date requires deleting the old operational key and adding the corrected record.

  7. Correct SIS and CALPADS

    Follow the vendor/CDE reconciliation process and repair the recurring extract.

  8. Submit and verify

    Confirm SENR0178 clears and the accepted history contains no overlap.

  9. Review similar records

    Find other overlaps created by the same rollover, re-entry, E150, or extract process.

Before closing the issue

  • Confirm both historical and current Start Dates and Exit Dates reflect actual chronology.
  • Verify no duplicate, improperly closed, or open prior segment remains.
  • Confirm the reviewed date is the student’s enrollment-segment Start Date—not a school organizational date.
  • Ensure a corrected Start Date used the proper operational-key transaction sequence.
  • Confirm the SIS and next extract reproduce the accepted history.
