Overview

Overview

Quest Rapid Recovery is backup, replication, and disaster-recovery software for physical servers, virtual machines, applications, and data. It captures block-based recovery points, stores them in managed repositories, and supports file, volume, application, bare-metal, and virtual-machine recovery from a web-based console. District IT teams can use it to restore administrative servers and records.

Recovery points connect protected servers and applications with earlier system states. IT and application owners coordinate restoration so recovered data remains usable with the other services needed for district operations. Copies must retain the identity, time, and application context needed for recovery. The availability of a recovery point and the readiness of a service are different operating questions.

Recovery decisions involve both technical order and district priorities. Technology and departmental leaders coordinate acceptable data gaps, service dependencies, authorized access, and restore testing. Understanding the platform means knowing what is protected, which recovery points are usable, and how restored systems will be reconciled with services that continued to change during the disruption.

Features

Features

Continuous data protection

  • Creates application-aware, block-based recovery points for supported Windows, Linux, physical, and virtual systems.
  • Deduplication and compression reduce repository consumption.

Flexible restoration

  • Supports granular restore, live recovery, bare-metal recovery, virtual standby, replication, and recovery to similar or dissimilar hardware according to workload.
  • Verified Recovery can automate selected recovery checks.

Cloud and security options

  • Supports archive or replication to supported cloud targets, object locking for eligible archives, encryption, and SAML-based administrative authentication.
  • Districts should isolate backup administration and regularly prove complete restoration procedures.

Rapid Recovery (formerly AppAssure) is a software solution which runs on top of a Windows Server host. The software may be purchased as either a stand-alone product or as a pre-installed rack-mount name brand appliance. In either configuration this central server is known as a “Core”. The core acts as the onsite repository of all backed up data.

When installed with a replication partner AppAssure is a very robust system for backup, replication and disaster recovery. Here’s how it works.

Like a traditional backup solution, the Rapid Recovery (formerly AppAssure) core communicates to each protected server via a lightweight agent. Following an initial “base” or “seed” of the server the agent monitors changes on the server between each backup. This backup is known as a snapshot. The cadence on this snapshot process is infinitely variable with a minimum value of 5 minutes. At each snapshot interval the agent aggregates all the changed blocks on the server, and following de-duplication and compression, they are written to the core.

Unlike many disk-based solutions the Rapid Recovery (formerly AppAssure) agent and process is very lightweight and has trivial impact on the target server.
