Microsoft School Data Sync (SDS) is a Microsoft 365 Education service that imports organization, user, role, course, class, and enrollment data from a district's SIS or student-management system. It uses those records to establish education-specific identities and rosters for Microsoft Teams, Intune for Education, and other Microsoft 365 or compatible third-party experiences.
SIS roles and enrollments become Microsoft education groups and class context. SIS and Microsoft administrators coordinate matching, organizational scope, and term transitions so access follows current source records. A successful transfer can still carry a mismatched identity or an inappropriate field value. Source ownership and agreed receiving rules give the technical exchange its business meaning.
The work continues after the first successful exchange. A source correction, new school year, vendor update, or failed transfer can change what receiving applications know. Application owners and technical teams coordinate monitoring, exception review, and approved changes so that synchronized data continues to represent the intended students, staff, classes, and services.

SIS roster ingestion

- Associates students and educators with schools, roles, classes, and grade information in the tenant.
Identity matching and monitoring
- Maps SIS identifiers to Microsoft Entra identities and reports synchronization errors and warnings.
- Requires careful identity rules and source-data preparation to avoid duplicate or mismatched accounts.
Scope and limitations
- Supports OneRoster API and Microsoft-defined CSV ingestion rather than every SIS-specific legacy connector.
- The retired PowerSchool REST plugin and SDS Classic workflows should not be represented as current interoperability options.
