What CALPADS allows

Character-string fields may contain alphabetic letters—including supported accented letters, tildes, and umlauts—numbers, periods, hyphens, apostrophes, forward slashes, and spaces under the specified UTF-8 standards.

Character/sourceHow it enters the fileWhat to do
Comma, caret, tab, or pipeA delimiter or local annotation was stored inside a value.Verify the authoritative value and correct the source/export handling.
Curly quote or long dashWord processing or copy/paste substituted typographic punctuation.Use an allowed apostrophe or hyphen only when it belongs to the actual value.
Line break or nonbreaking spaceCopy/paste from a document, email, or web form.Clean the invisible character in the source system.
Decorative symbol or emojiA label or note was appended to the coded value or identifier.Submit only the supported data value.

Do not strip all punctuation indiscriminately. Periods, hyphens, apostrophes, forward slashes, and spaces can be valid. Remove or replace only the unsupported character while preserving the authoritative value.

Recommended correction path

  1. 1

    Identify the field

Use the submission detail to locate the rejected SERV column; do not assume it is 25.16.

  2. 2

    Inspect raw text

View hidden characters and distinguish straight punctuation from typographic look-alikes.

  3. 3

    Verify the source value

Confirm the code or identifier in the authoritative SEDS, SIS, plan, or organization record.

  4. 4

    Repair and test broadly

Correct the source or export sanitizer, then inspect other values produced by the same process.
