SDLA Quick Fix · Zoom and Microsoft Teams

People Cannot Hear or See Me in Zoom or Microsoft Teams

Check meeting controls, the selected camera and microphone, and device permissions before escalating a Zoom or Microsoft Teams problem.

Teacher

I joined a Zoom or Microsoft Teams meeting, but other people cannot hear me, cannot see me, or receive sound or video from the wrong device.

Quick Fix

Keep communication available. Post essential directions in the meeting chat while you test. If audio or video supports an accommodation, use the approved alternate communication method and contact the appropriate support team promptly.

Follow these steps in order.

  1. Check the meeting controls

Make sure the microphone is unmuted and the camera is on. If either control is unavailable or crossed out, look for an organizer message or ask the meeting host whether attendee audio or video has been restricted.

  2. Check physical privacy and mute controls

Open the camera shutter, check the keyboard camera key, lower a headset microphone boom into its speaking position, and release any physical mute button. Reconnect a wired device or confirm that a Bluetooth device is charged and connected to this computer.

  3. Select the intended camera and microphone

Open the meeting's audio and video settings and choose the built-in or connected devices you intend to use. Close other meeting, camera, or recording applications that may already be using the camera or microphone, then test again.

  4. Check browser and operating-system permission

If you joined on the web, use the site-permission control beside the address bar to allow the camera and microphone for the meeting site, then refresh and rejoin. Also confirm that the operating system permits Zoom, Teams, or the browser to use those devices. Do not override a managed or locked setting.

  5. Run a private test and restart once

Use Zoom's audio and video test or, in the Teams desktop app, open Settings > Devices > Make a test call when that option is available. Do not test with students present or record student information. If the test fails, close the meeting application completely, restart the device once, and retest.

Copy-and-paste message for local IT

In [Zoom/Microsoft Teams] on [district device/browser], participants cannot [hear me/see me/both]. I confirmed the meeting controls and physical privacy or mute controls, selected [camera] and [microphone], closed other camera or meeting applications, and checked the available site and device permissions. The private test returned [result], and [another app/device] returned [result]. Please review the managed permissions, device detection, and meeting policy.

Stop and escalate when

The camera or microphone is missing from the device list, permissions are managed or locked, the device fails in more than one approved application, or the problem affects multiple users. Driver, security-policy, meeting-policy, and hardware changes belong to authorized support staff.
