The Video Is Playing, but There Is No Sound

Check the video player, raise the media volume while the video is playing, and make sure the iPad is not sending its sound to AirPods, a Bluetooth speaker, Apple TV, or another playback destination.

Teacher

A video is visibly playing on a student's iPad, but we cannot hear anything. The volume looks like it is turned up. Where did the sound go?

Quick Fix

Keep the video playing while you check. The iPad's buttons control media volume while media is playing. When nothing is playing, the same buttons may control alerts instead, which can make the displayed volume misleading.

Media volumeRaise the volume while the video is actively playing.

Playback DestinationOpen the audio destination list from the player or Control Center.

Select iPadReturn the sound to the iPad's built-in speakers.

Follow these checks in order. Stop when the sound returns.

  1. Check the video player's own sound control

    Tap the video once to reveal its controls. Look for a muted speaker icon, an audio button, or a volume control inside the website or app. Unmute the player, then press Play again.

  2. Raise the media volume while the video plays

    With the video actively playing, press the iPad's Volume Up button several times. Alternatively, swipe down from the top-right edge to open Control Center and drag the volume slider upward.

  3. Open the Playback Destination list

    In Control Center, on the Lock Screen, or in the app's Now Playing controls, tap the Playback Destination button. Depending on the iPadOS version and app, it may resemble an AirPlay symbol or an audio-output button.

  4. Select the intended speaker

    Choose iPad to use the built-in speakers. If AirPods, headphones, a Bluetooth speaker, Apple TV, or another room's speaker is selected, the video may be sending its audio there instead.

  5. Test whether the issue follows the video or the iPad
    • Play a known audio clip in another app.
    • Try a different video in the original app.
    • If other audio works, reopen the original video or app.
    • If nothing produces sound, save the student's work and restart the iPad.

Other apps have soundThe iPad speaker and basic volume controls are working. Recheck the original video's mute control, permissions, or app session.

No apps have soundRecheck the playback destination and connected accessories. If the iPad remains silent after a restart, contact local technology support.

Before disconnecting an audio device

Ask the student whether AirPods, headphones, or a hearing device is intentionally connected. Audio routing may be part of an accessibility accommodation. If assistance is still needed, provide support with:

  • the iPad asset number and model;
  • the affected app or website;
  • the playback destination currently shown; and
  • whether sound works in a second app.
