The Projector or Classroom Display Says “No Signal”

Check power, input selection, and the accessible cable path before deciding whether the computer, adapter, or classroom display needs support.

Teacher

The projector or classroom display is on, but it says “No Signal,” “No Input,” or “Source Not Found.”

Quick Fix

Keep the lesson moving. Put the directions on the board, use printed material, or shift to a non-projected activity while you test one connection path. “No Signal” usually means the display is not receiving video from the selected source.

Follow these steps in order.

  1. Confirm that both devices are awake

Wake the computer and verify that the projector or display has power. If the display was just turned on, wait for it to finish starting before testing again.

  2. Select the input that matches the connected port

Use the display's Input or Source control and choose the label beside the connected cable, such as HDMI 1, HDMI 2, DisplayPort, or USB-C. Pause after each choice instead of cycling continuously.

  3. Reconnect only the teacher-accessible cable path

Disconnect and firmly reconnect the cable or adapter at the computer and at any accessible wall plate or display port. Do not move a ceiling-mounted projector, remove covers, or pull cables from a wall or floor opening.

  4. Ask the computer to use the classroom display

On Windows, press Windows + P and choose Duplicate or Extend. On a Chromebook, open Settings > Device > Displays. If no external display appears, the computer is not detecting the connection.

  5. Run one approved comparison test

If local practice permits, try one known-working cable, adapter, or teacher device. Record exactly what changed. This helps IT locate the failure without repeating the entire classroom test.

Copy-and-paste message for local IT

The projector/display in [room] shows [exact message]. The computer is [device type], connected through [cable/adapter/wall plate] to input [input name]. I confirmed power, reselected the matching input, reconnected the accessible cable, and selected [Duplicate/Extend/other]. I also tested [known-working item, if permitted] with result [result]. Please check the connection path and classroom display.

Stop and escalate when

A cable or port is damaged, hot, loose, sparking, or smells unusual; the connection runs through a ceiling, wall, floor, or locked cabinet; or the display remains undetected after one approved comparison test. Do not climb furniture or open mounted equipment.
