The Interactive Display Shows the Picture, but Touch Is Not Working

Keep teaching with the mouse or trackpad while you check the separate data connection that commonly carries touch input.

The computer picture appears on the interactive display, but touching or writing on the display does not control the computer.

Quick Fix

Use the mouse or trackpad as a temporary control. A working picture confirms that the video path is active. Touch may use a separate USB data cable, a particular USB port paired with the selected video input, or a USB-C connection that carries both video and touch.

Follow these steps in order.

  1. Test touch in one simple place

With the lesson closed or minimized, touch a harmless item such as the pointer area or a blank whiteboard. Wait a few seconds after waking the display or changing inputs before deciding that touch has failed.

  2. Check the accessible USB touch connection

If the computer uses HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA for the picture, look for the separate USB cable labeled Touch, USB, or USB-B and reconnect it at the computer. If several touch ports are available, use the one associated with the selected video input. Do not disturb cables inside walls, floors, or mounted equipment.

  3. Clear safe, visible obstructions

Remove papers, decorations, tape, or objects touching the display frame. If the screen or sensors need cleaning, follow the display manufacturer's instructions rather than applying a classroom cleaner directly.

  4. Confirm that the computer detects a touchscreen

Check the computer's display or connected-device settings for the external touchscreen. On a Chromebook, open Settings > Device > Displays. If the touchscreen is absent, report that result; do not install a driver or begin calibration unless local IT directs you.

  5. Restart once and document the result

Restart the display using its normal power control, then restart the computer once. If touch remains unavailable, note whether finger touch, the pen, or both are affected and whether the pointer appears in the wrong place.

Copy-and-paste message for local IT

The interactive display in [room] shows the computer picture, but [finger touch/pen/both] does not work. It is connected through [video cable] and [USB touch cable or USB-C] using input [input name]. I reconnected the accessible USB touch connection, removed visible frame obstructions, and restarted the display and computer. The computer [does/does not] list an external touchscreen, and the pointer [does not appear/appears in the wrong place]. Please check the touch connection, port mapping, drivers, and calibration.

Stop and escalate when

Touch triggers by itself, lands in the wrong place, fails only in part of the screen, or the screen or frame is cracked; the connection is mounted or inaccessible; or the repair requires calibration, drivers, firmware, administrator access, or cable replacement. If touch supports an accommodation, provide an alternate access method and notify the appropriate support team promptly.
