SDLA Quick Fix · Classroom Presentation and Displays

My Computer Screen Is Not Appearing Correctly on the Classroom Display

Choose mirror or extend intentionally, move the presentation to the correct screen, and correct common size or orientation problems.

Teacher

The classroom display shows the wrong screen, only the desktop background, or an image that is cropped, sideways, too small, or too large.

Quick Fix

Protect private information first. Close student records, email, gradebooks, and personal tabs before changing display modes. Pause notifications if that control is available on your district device.

Follow these steps in order.

  1. Name what the classroom display is doing

A desktop background with no lesson window usually means the display is being used as a second workspace. Matching images on both screens means they are mirrored. Cropping, black bars, or a sideways image points to a display setting.

  2. Choose mirror or extend intentionally

For the simplest whole-class view, choose Duplicate on Windows or Mirror Built-in Display on a Chromebook. Use Extend only when you want a separate workspace, such as presenter notes.

  3. Move the lesson to the classroom display

If you are extending the desktop, drag the lesson window toward the classroom display until it appears there, then start the presentation. Keep private windows on the teacher screen.

  4. Restore ordinary display settings

Open the computer's display settings, select the classroom display, and check its orientation, resolution, and display size. Choose the system's recommended resolution when one is shown. Do not install drivers or change managed display profiles.

  5. Reconnect once if the setting will not hold

Disconnect and reconnect the teacher-accessible cable or adapter, then restart the computer once if needed. Record whether the problem returns after reconnecting, signing in, or opening a particular presentation.

Copy-and-paste message for local IT

In [room], the classroom display shows [desktop only/cropped image/sideways image/other] when connected to [device type] through [cable/adapter]. I selected [Duplicate/Mirror/Extend], checked the recommended resolution and orientation, and reconnected the accessible cable. The issue [did/did not] return after restart. Please review the saved display settings and connection.

Stop and escalate when

The image flashes, shows persistent lines or unusual colors, repeatedly resets, or remains cropped at the recommended settings; display controls are locked or managed; or the only available fix requires a driver, firmware, mounted-cable, or administrator change.
