SDLA Quick Fix Idea · Chromebook
The Chromebook Will Not Turn On or the Screen Is Black
Determine whether the display is simply dim, the battery is deeply discharged, or the device needs hardware support without guessing from the charging-light color.
Teacher
The Chromebook appears to be off or the screen is completely black. How can I tell whether this is a brightness, charging, or hardware problem?
Quick Fix
Stop immediately if the battery or case is swollen, unusually hot, smells unusual, shows liquid damage, or the charger is frayed or damaged. Disconnect power if it is safe to do so, move students away, and follow district safety procedures.
Do not rely on one light color
Charging indicators vary by Chromebook model. Record whether the light is on, off, blinking, or changes when the charger is connected. An orange light is common on some models, but it is not universal.
Work through these steps in order and test after each one.

1
Rule out a screen that is simply too dim
Press the Brightness Up key several times. Look closely for a faint image. Disconnect any dock, adapter, or external monitor, then press Power once and check the built-in display again.
-
2
Check the power connection
- Use the district-approved charger for that Chromebook model.
- Seat the connector firmly at the Chromebook and at the power adapter.
- Test the wall outlet with an approved device or move to a known-working outlet.
- Inspect the charging port and cable without inserting tools.
-
3
Allow time for a deeply discharged battery
Leave the Chromebook connected to power for at least 30 minutes. Avoid repeatedly trying to start it during that interval. After 30 minutes, press Power once and wait for a response.
-
4
Try the hardware reset
If the Chromebook still does not start and there is no safety concern, hold Refresh, tap Power, and release Refresh when it starts. Google notes that hardware resets might affect some files in Downloads.

5
Know when to stop
Submit the device for support if there is no charging indicator, the light blinks unexpectedly, the device starts but the display remains black, the issue returns after unplugging, or a known-good approved charger does not help. Do not Powerwash or attempt recovery unless technology staff directs it.
The screen appears after Brightness UpThe Chromebook was powered on but the backlight was dimmed. Restore a comfortable brightness and confirm the top-row keys respond normally.
It starts after chargingLet the device reach a usable charge before class. If deep discharge happens repeatedly, report the battery condition rather than treating each occurrence as a one-time fix.
Lights appear but the screen stays blackDisconnect accessories and submit a ticket. This can indicate a display, firmware, or hardware problem that requires device-specific support.
No lights or responseTry a known-working approved charger if policy allows, record the result, and send the Chromebook to technology support.
