SDLA Quick Fix · Boom Cards

My Boom Cards Deck Is Not Scoring Correctly

Preview one problem card, verify its answer type and scoring controls, and repair drag-and-drop links without changing the rest of the deck.

Teacher-author

A drag-and-drop answer is not accepted, the card will not advance, or a fill-in-the-blank response is not scored the way I expected.

Quick Fix

First, work on a copy when possible. Duplicate your unpublished or editable deck before changing scoring controls, then record the card number and the exact behavior you are correcting.

Follow these steps in order.

  1. Preview the single problem card

Test the expected correct answer and one known incorrect answer. Note whether the object cannot be dropped, is marked wrong, turns blue or green without advancing, or requires teacher scoring.

  2. Check draggable objects and drop zones

Confirm that each movable object is marked Draggable and each target is marked Drop Zone. Make the zone large enough for more than half of the draggable object to fit inside it.

  3. Clear and reconnect unexpected links

Select each drop zone and inspect its linked draggable IDs. If extra or stale links appear, use Clear, restore the Drop Zone setting, and reconnect only the intended draggable answers.

  4. Remove ordinary Correct flags from drag-and-drop elements

Boom Learning says drag-and-drop elements should not also be marked Correct. Their scoring comes from the draggable-to-drop-zone links. Remove an accidental Correct flag and preview again.

  5. Check whether a written response needs human scoring

A fill-in-the-blank item marked as open response is reviewed through Boom's human-scoring workflow. If automatic scoring is intended, review the answer type and accepted answers before reassigning the deck.

Copy-and-paste message for Boom Learning support

In my editable Boom deck [deck title], card [number] does not score or advance as expected. The card uses [drag-and-drop/fill-in-the-blank/other]. In Preview, [exact action] produces [exact result]. I verified the draggable and drop-zone settings, cleared unexpected links, checked for ordinary Correct flags, and reviewed whether the response uses human scoring. Please advise on the remaining card configuration.

Stop and escalate when

The deck is purchased or otherwise not editable, changing one card would affect shared or published content, or the same configuration behaves differently between Preview and assigned play. Preserve the deck URL, card number, and screenshots.
