SPRG0270: Invalid Program Membership Start Date with an R Transaction

An SPRG record uses Transaction Type Code R, but its Education Program Membership Start Date is outside the current academic year. Verify whether the date is wrong or whether a historical program record is being corrected with the wrong transaction workflow.

Official validation

If Transaction Type Code equals R, Education Program Membership Start Date must be within the current academic year.

  • 3.02 — Transaction Type Code
  • 3.15 — Education Program Membership Start Date
  • Severity: Fatal
  • Type: Input Validation

The current academic year is determined from the CALPADS processing date. Field 3.15 is also part of the SPRG operational key, so changing it identifies a different program record rather than merely editing a descriptive field.

Determine whether the date or transaction is wrong

The start date is inaccurate

Program eligibility, participation, service, enrollment, or source-system evidence establishes a different start date.

Action: Correct the authoritative program record, then generate the transaction appropriate to the corrected operational key.

The historical start date is accurate

The program began before the current academic year, so an R transaction using that date is not allowed.

Action: Preserve the factual date and use the supported historical correction workflow rather than moving the start date.

Match the complete SPRG operational key

  • School of Attendance
  • SSID
  • Education Program Code
  • Education Program Membership Start Date
  • Education Service Academic Year, when applicable
  • Education Service Code, when applicable

Review every component before replacing or adding a record. A correction aimed at the wrong key can leave the original ODS record unchanged and create a second program record.

Recommended resolution

  1. Preserve the rejected row and current ODS state

Capture the submission ID, SSID, school, program code, transaction type, membership dates, service fields, raw SPRG row, and a current CALPADS extract.

  2. Confirm the intended program record

Match the row to the correct student, school, program, membership category, service, and existing ODS operational key.

  3. Establish the factual start date

Use authoritative eligibility, participation, service, enrollment, application, or determination evidence appropriate to the program.

  4. Compare it with the current academic year

If the supported start date is current-year, correct the source or extract that supplied the wrong date and reevaluate the R transaction.

  5. Plan a historical correction

If the supported date predates the current year, do not alter it. Determine the exact official or vendor-supported transaction sequence needed to replace the target record while preserving its historical key.

  6. Correct the authoritative system

Repair the program record, effective date, operational-key mapping, rollover, or extract logic that produced the invalid transaction.

  7. Use a controlled submission

Submit only the intended correction records, observe validation and posting behavior, and stop if the target or resulting history differs from the preflight plan.

  8. Perform exact postflight

Confirm SPRG0270 clears, the intended ODS record changed, no duplicate key was created, and all program start and end dates remain factual.

  9. Review the affected population

Check other historical program corrections generated by the same SIS workflow, rollover, transaction default, or extraction rule.

Close only after verification

  • The Education Program Membership Start Date remains supported by the program record.
  • The transaction type is permitted for that date and correction purpose.
  • The intended ODS operational key was changed and no duplicate record was created.
  • The source system, regenerated SPRG data, and accepted CALPADS history agree.
  • Other records sharing the transaction workflow or rollover logic have been reviewed.
