What is a California Partnership Academy?

A California Partnership Academy (CPA) is a California state program generally organized as a three-year, grades 10–12 “school-within-a-school.” It combines academic and career-technical coursework with employer and postsecondary partnerships, mentoring, and work-based learning. A locally named academy, career pathway, or small learning community is not automatically an official CPA.

Program code 113 should therefore be used only when the student participates in a recognized California Partnership Academy. Each recognized academy has its own five-character state identifier.

Keep these identifiers separate

IdentifierWhat it identifiesUse in this rule
School CDS codeThe school where the student is enrolledDo not place it in field 3.19
Program code 113The California Partnership Academy program typePlace in field 3.13
Five-character CPA IDThe specific state-recognized academyPlace in field 3.19
Local academy/pathway nameThe locally used program labelUse only to locate the official CPA ID

Do not invent an ID or copy one from another academy. Verify the academy in the current CDE California Partnership Academies directory and confirm that this student—not simply the school—participates in it.

Recommended correction path

  1. 1

    Confirm the student’s program

Ask the school’s academy coordinator or program office whether the student actually participates in an official California Partnership Academy.

  2. 2

    Verify the academy

Use the current CDE directory or current grant/program records to locate the academy’s exact five-character identifier. Preserve leading zeroes.

  3. 3

    Choose the supported correction

If participation is confirmed, enter the verified CPA ID in field 3.19. If the student is not in an official CPA, correct or remove program code 113 rather than supplying a placeholder.

  4. 4

    Check the source-system crosswalk

Make sure the SIS maps each local academy to the correct state ID and does not substitute a school code, pathway code, academy name, or grant number.

  5. 5

    Resubmit and audit

Post the corrected SPRG record, then review other program-113 records for the same blank-ID pattern.
