Hold an IEP Review Meeting Within 30 Days of a Parent Request
A request-intake and scheduling control that preserves the received date, clarifies concerns without narrowing them, assembles the right team, and produces meaningful—not merely timely—review.
In Plain Language: Date-stamp the written request and schedule an IEP team meeting within 30 days, subject to the statutory vacation exclusion. Clarify the parent's concerns to prepare well, but do not use clarification as a new start date or prerequisite.
Why this matters
A meeting held on time without the needed records, decision makers, providers, interpretation, or proposals can frustrate the protection the timeline was meant to provide.
Joint ownership
Clock owner: case manager/special education office. Team: parent, student when appropriate, required IEP members, relevant providers/assessors, interpreter, and LEA representative.
Operational workflow
- 1. Date-stamp and acknowledge the written request; identify meeting, assessment, records, safety, service, and communication components.
- 2. Calculate the 30-day deadline and vacation exclusions; offer dates early enough for meaningful parent participation.
- 3. Gather progress, service, behavior, assessment, attendance, and parent/student input; invite required and relevant members with authority.
- 4. Hold the meeting, address each concern, document decisions and dissent, provide required PWN/safeguards and IEP copy, and implement agreements.
