Review Each IEP at Least Annually—and Use the Meeting to Rebuild the Program

In Plain Language: The IEP team reviews the program at least once every 12 months. The team must consider progress and current information, revise the IEP as appropriate, and ensure the next program is individualized and implementable.

Why this matters

An on-time meeting can still fail the student if goals, services, accommodations, or placement simply roll forward without examining results and current needs.

Joint ownership

Coordinator: case manager. Team: parent, student when appropriate, general and special educators, LEA representative, assessment interpreter, related-service staff, and others with knowledge or expertise.

Operational workflow

  1. 1. Set a compliance date early enough for scheduling, notice, interpretation, records review, staff reports, and parent/student input.
  2. 2. Compare baseline, goals, service delivery, progress reports, assessments, attendance, behavior, access, and family concerns.
  3. 3. Develop current present levels, measurable goals, services/minutes, accommodations, supports, placement, assessment and transition components.
  4. 4. Confirm informed participation, document offers and disagreements, provide the IEP copy, and translate agreed services into schedules and staff instructions.
