In Plain Language: Vision screening is a cycle, not a one-day event: build the correct pupil roster, give required notice, use qualified personnel and approved procedures, document results, notify and refer when follow-up is indicated, and track whether the family obtained evaluation or needs help.

Why this matters

A screening does not diagnose an eye condition. Its value comes from identifying pupils who may need professional evaluation and ensuring that vision needs do not silently obstruct learning.

Joint ownership

Clinical owner: school nurse/qualified vision screener. Partners: enrollment, special education, teachers, family, provider, student support, language access, and records staff.

Operational workflow

  1. 1. Build the roster by grade, first California/elementary entry, special-education trigger, prior professional exam, and documented exemption.
  2. 2. Provide parent notice and schedule qualified personnel, calibrated equipment, accessible setting, and confidential data collection.
  3. 3. Perform required distance/near and applicable color-vision procedures; rescreen or refer according to current guidance.
  4. 4. Notify the parent/guardian in understandable language and provide provider/resource information when follow-up is indicated.
  5. 5. Track evaluation/treatment or outreach, communicate educational implications appropriately, and update the pupil health record.
