Provide Initial and Annual Refresher Training to Emergency Anti-Seizure Medication Volunteers

A competency and pupil-specific readiness control for seizure recognition, action-plan implementation, medication or therapy administration, emergency follow-up, documentation, and retraining.

In Plain Language: A volunteer receives initial and annual refresher training from the school nurse or another qualified person designated by the authorizing physician. Training covers seizure recognition, the appropriate response, the specific emergency medication or therapy, and basic emergency follow-up.

Why this matters

General awareness training alone does not prepare someone to follow a pupil-specific action plan or use a particular rescue product safely.

Joint ownership

Trainer/clinical supervisor: school nurse or other qualified designee. Volunteer: designated trained employee. Partners: parent/guardian, prescriber, administrator, EMS, records/privacy, and pupil support team.

Operational workflow

  1. 1. Confirm parent request/consent, provider orders, signed statutory notice, medication/therapy, action plan, and lawful volunteer designation.
  2. 2. Deliver the full CDE minimum curriculum and hands-on product/pupil-specific instruction; assess competence rather than attendance alone.
  3. 3. Map trained coverage to the pupil's schedule, transport, trips, activities, absences, and backup needs.
  4. 4. Inspect storage, expiration, accessibility, action-plan copies, communications, and EMS route.
  5. 5. Refresh annually and after changes; document every administration and complete clinical/operational review.

Training boundaries

  • Recognize seizure types and emergency warning signs.
  • Follow the pupil's seizure action plan and provider instructions.
  • Administer or assist only with the authorized medication or therapy.
  • Activate emergency follow-up and document/transfer care.
