In Plain Language: First verify the deficiency. Notify the parent/guardian in understandable language, identify exactly what documentation is needed, give no more than 10 school days, and offer health-resource information. If compliance is not documented by the deadline, exclude until the pupil comes into compliance.

Why this matters

Exclusion is not punishment. It is a public-health admission rule, but an incorrect or poorly communicated decision can deprive a pupil of instruction and disproportionately harm families facing access barriers.

Clinical decision: school nurse/health services. Notice/attendance: registrar and administrator. Support partners: homeless/foster liaison, special education, family services, provider/public health, language access, and instructional continuity staff.

Operational workflow

  1. 1. Re-audit the source record, current table, dose interval, age/grade, exemption, and admission history with qualified health staff.
  2. 2. Issue written notice stating the deficiency, acceptable proof, health resources, exact deadline of no more than 10 school days, and exclusion consequence.
  3. 3. Track outreach and barriers; process documentation immediately and correct any school error.
  4. 4. If unresolved, authorize and record exclusion on the correct date; maintain required IEP and other legal protections and instructional coordination.
  5. 5. Readmit promptly when valid compliance documentation is received and close the audit trail.

Parent-facing explanation

  • The school is required to verify current immunization evidence for attendance.
  • The notice identifies the missing requirement and gives a short period to correct or document a valid exemption.
  • If proof is not supplied, exclusion continues only until the legal requirement is met; the school should help the family locate the correct path.
