  1. How would you turn a broad request to “show whether the program worked” into an analysis?

    Strong response indicators: Clarifies decision purpose, theory of action, implementation, population, outcomes, comparison strategy, timeframe, confounders, data quality, feasibility, limitations, review, and what conclusions the design can and cannot support.

  2. Describe how you would validate a new assessment dataset.

Position Description

Under the direction of the appropriate district administrator, the Assessment Analyst performs technical and applied analysis of state, interim, benchmark, diagnostic, classroom, and other district-authorized assessment data.

The analyst develops documented datasets, measures, queries, visualizations, reports, and briefs that help schools and departments understand student learning evidence. The position validates populations and results, applies appropriate statistical methods, protects confidential information, and explains uncertainty and limitations.

The role partners with assessment, curriculum and instruction, research, accountability, multilingual learner, special education, student information, data warehouse, and technology personnel. It is distinguished from assessment-program coordination by its primary emphasis on measurement, analytical production, interpretation, and decision support.

Required Education and Credentials

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, educational measurement, statistics, research, data science, information systems, public administration, or a closely related field. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted where permitted by district policy.
  • Successful completion of all district-required employment clearances.
  • Completion of district-required student-privacy, assessment-security, accessibility, and information-security training within established timelines.

Preferred

  • Graduate degree or advanced coursework in educational measurement, statistics, psychometrics, research methods, data science, program evaluation, or a related field.
  • Professional learning in assessment literacy, statistical programming, data visualization, reproducible research, accessibility, or data governance.
  • Training in SQL and one or more analytical tools such as R, Python, SAS, SPSS, or an equivalent environment.

Required / Desired Experience

Required Experience

  • Three or more years of progressively responsible experience analyzing educational, assessment, research, program, or comparable administrative data.
  • Experience preparing, cleaning, matching, validating, and analyzing record-level data from multiple sources.
  • Experience applying descriptive statistics and producing reports or visualizations for technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Experience documenting definitions, analytical logic, quality checks, limitations, revisions, and source lineage.
  • Experience handling confidential data and balancing concurrent requests and deadlines.

Desired Experience

  • Experience analyzing CAASPP, ELPAC, interim assessment, local benchmark, universal screening, or progress-monitoring data.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Data Preparation and Quality Assurance

  • Acquire assessment and related student data through approved secure processes and verify source, version, schema, completeness, and authorized use.
  • Develop analysis-ready files by applying documented inclusion rules, identity matching, code mappings, effective dates, and exception handling.
  • Reconcile student counts, testing populations, demographic and program attributes, score fields, and aggregate totals with authoritative sources.
  • Profile missingness, duplicates, outliers, invalid values, unexpected shifts, and cross-system discrepancies and coordinate root-cause correction.
  • Maintain quality-control logs, peer-review evidence, issue histories, and traceability from source data to final products.

Assessment Measurement and Analysis

  • Calculate and interpret participation, completion, achievement, scale-score, distance, growth, claim or domain, and other approved measures.
  • Apply technically appropriate methods for longitudinal, cohort, matched-student, grade, course, school, program, and student-group analyses.
  • Evaluate comparability, missing data, sample size, suppression, measurement error, changes in administration, and other limits affecting conclusions.
  • Support evaluation of instructional programs, interventions, curriculum implementation, opportunity gaps, and improvement initiatives.
  • Consult with requestors to convert broad questions into clear populations, measures, comparison strategies, deliverables, and decision uses.

  • Produce accurate dashboards, briefs, presentations, data files, school profiles, and recurring reports for authorized audiences.

  • Create accessible visualizations and plain-language explanations that preserve context and avoid misleading scales, rankings, or comparisons.

Reproducible Analytics, Governance, and Privacy

  • Develop reusable queries, scripts, parameterized reports, test cases, and controlled automation with logging and human review.
  • Use version control or comparable change-management practices for code, specifications, data definitions, and published outputs.
  • Maintain measure dictionaries, analytical specifications, lineage diagrams, runbooks, release notes, and continuity documentation.
