Standard 6 - Developing as a Professional Educator

Teachers reflect on their teaching practice to support student learning. They establish professional goals and engage in continuous and purposeful professional growth and development. They collaborate with colleagues and engage in the broader professional community to support teacher and student learning. Teachers learn about and work with families to support student learning. They engage local communities in support of the instructional program. They manage professional responsibilities to maintain motivation and commitment to all students. Teachers demonstrate professional responsibility, integrity, and ethical conduct.

6.3 Collaborating with colleagues and the broader professional community to support teacher and student learning

As teachers develop, they may ask, “How do I…” or “Why do I…”

Collaborate with colleagues to meet all students' diverse learning needs

Guidance: Participate in IEP and SST meetings, co-plan with specialists, and share strategies with paraeducators to provide cohesive, student-centered instruction.

Remain receptive to feedback from colleagues, mentors, and supervisors

Guidance: Welcome constructive feedback through coaching cycles, peer observation, and goal setting. Reflect on input and implement adjustments for growth.

Support school and district goals and priorities

Guidance: Align instructional planning to district initiatives (e.g., LCAP, MTSS, SEL). Participate in site-based committees and strategic planning efforts.

Contribute to school-wide events, activities, and decision-making

Guidance: Participate in student showcases, cultural events, and after-school clubs. Join leadership teams or advisory committees to contribute to school climate and culture.

Establish productive relationships with school staff and become a valued community member

Guidance: Foster collegiality through regular collaboration, shared responsibilities, and staff appreciation. Attend school functions and show support for school initiatives.

Contribute to the learning of other educators

Guidance: Lead professional development sessions, share resources, mentor new teachers, and present at conferences to build shared instructional capacity.

Benefit from and contribute to professional organizations

Guidance: Join subject-specific associations or regional educator networks. Participate in online forums and attend events to grow professionally and collaborate across districts.

Benefit from and add to the knowledge base of the profession

Guidance: Engage in action research, write for educational publications, and participate in innovation networks to advance shared best practices and research-based strategies.
