6.1 Reflecting on teaching practice in support of student learning
As teachers develop, they may ask, “How do I…” or “Why do I…”
Assess my growth as a teacher over time
Guidance: Use teaching journals, observation feedback, student outcomes, and performance reviews to evaluate progress. Compare past and current practices to identify growth areas.
Learn about teaching as I observe and interact with my students
Guidance: Use daily student interactions as formative data. Notice learning patterns, questions, and responses to guide instructional changes and personal learning.
Reflect on my instructional successes and dilemmas to move my practice forward
Guidance: Identify what worked and what didn’t in your lessons. Reflect with peers or mentors and use protocols to evaluate and revise instructional decisions.
Analyze my teaching to understand what contributes to student learning
Guidance: Collect student work samples, track engagement, and compare outcomes across strategies. Seek student input when possible to analyze effectiveness.
Formulate professional development plans based on reflection and analysis
Guidance: Use reflection journals and evaluation tools to identify focus areas. Attend workshops, engage in coaching cycles, and set SMART goals for ongoing growth.
Develop awareness of potential bias that might influence my teaching or affect student learning
Guidance: Engage in equity audits, implicit bias training, and cultural humility exercises. Reflect on how assumptions and expectations may impact interactions and instruction.
