Personally Identifiable Information

FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, considers the following information to be "personally identifiable information" (PII) when it is directly related to a student:
- Name: Any part of the name that would allow someone to identify the student with reasonable certainty.
- Address: Including street address, city, and ZIP code.
- Personal identifiers: Such as social security numbers, student identification numbers, or biometric records.
- Other indirect identifiers: Such as date of birth, place of birth, or mother's maiden name.
- Other information: That, alone or in combination, is linked or linkable to a specific student that would allow a reasonable person in the school community, who does not have personal knowledge of the relevant circumstances, to identify the student with reasonable certainty.
FERPA is very protective of this information and regulates its disclosure to ensure student privacy is maintained. Any educational institution or agency that receives federal funding must comply with FERPA regulations regarding the protection of personally identifiable information.
