TOPICS:

Charter School Health: Management, Compliance, Needs and Opportunities

Led by: Emily Green, School Nurse

All charter schools new and old can benefit from this session focusing on school-based health management. Nurse Emily Green will present information on management of daily health office visits, chronic health issues including asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and other health impairments that place physical limitations or otherwise impact their school day and access to curriculum. Health plans and school based medical orders will be reviewed. You will leave knowing current recommendations for a compliant school health program that includes health screenings, student services including medication administration and health procedures, staff health trainings, personnel recommendations, as well as current legislative updates impacting charter schools such as sexual health education.

Special Education: From Identification to Exit

Led by: Isabella George, Assistant Director of School Services and Julie Hruby, Regional Director

Still hoping to demystify the special education process at your school and ensure your identification and child find processes are as tight as they can be? This session is intended for those looking to ensure compliance in their special education program to reduce your legal risk and how to best support the students in your school throughout the time their IEP is active until it is time for them to exit.

They Come from Special Day Class: School Choice and Comparable Programs

Led by: Megan Moore

Charter schools face unique challenges balancing the obligation to enroll all students who wish to attend and providing a comparable program for newly enrolled students with Individual Education Programs (IEP). This presentation includes an overview of the laws requiring charter schools to provide comparable programs for newly enrolled students. Attendees will leave with practical tips when enrolling students who have IEPs with more restrictive placements (nonpublic schools, special day classes), medical needs, and significant related services.

Section 504: The Other FAPE

Led by: Megan Moore

Charter schools must provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE) for students with disabilities. Section 504 presents unique challenges given its FAPE requirement and lack of funding. This presentation includes an overview of Section 504, including every charter school's obligation to have board-adopted Section 504 procedures and parent rights separate and apart from the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). Using hypothetical situations, I will guide attendees through the current legal landscape of Section 504.
